Kenwood: Why do some of the MC-50 microphones have the black rubber band on the element?

Okay, I have some thoughts on it ( pretty obvious) but wondered if anyone had the “official” explanation. Mine was a homemade band and was glued on. I removed it to clean up the mic. I have seen them with and without it.
Benifits, urban legend....completely weird question? :)
Cheers

Probably just to give it a little more grip and after time, it becomes loose or dirty and gets removed.

Its on the element and the mic’s in a stand.... You never touch it as you key the mic at the base. Its a desk mic, sorry forgot to mention that...lol
