Hey guys,

I'm new here and just started getting into scanning. Before i knew it i was bringing my hand held wherever i go and set up a little antenna for my vehicle. Then i got a desktop scanner and go on a website the gives you live feeds of my area every night. I try to not listen to it sometime but i feel left out and come listen to whats going on.

What makes scanning so addicting? Why am I wanting to go out and buy more scanners?

Just want to know what you guys find addicting about this hobby?

Welcome to RadioReference stano0098 :)
It's a 24/7 thing...no matter what, there is always something going on especially, if you are lucky enough to live in a large metropolitan area.

Im looking for a career in law enforcement. Hopefully if everything goes right i should be one in approx. 1-2 yrs

I don't know how that will affect your scanning hobby. I build and maintain these systems... The last thing I want to do is go home and listen to them! I get enough of that during the day.

1. It is happening RIGHT NOW.
2. It is the ACTUAL incidents, not information filtered through some news agency.
3. My interest is in technology & broadcasting as much as the above.

Thats also a couple of things that keeps me listening. Knowing before most people and knowing the facts.

I have the perfect cure for the addiction. Go into the radio business.

i think scanning is addicting becuase deep down inside we are all nosy and curious creatures... which is why everyone slows down @ the accident lol

I like the technology as well as the actual "news" as it happens and not filtered by the news plus you know what's going on at that sec not at 11PM.

There is allways something different going on, so you can't get bored with it.

the Addiction

Hi, my name is kyguy . I have an addiction.....:D

Good one  You can take one scanner and make it bang out alot of noise, or you can take multi scanners and follow more things as they develop or are ongoing while still searching for more. Then comes the experimentation tremors where you have to seek more signal and fine tune everything. Final stages you start finding yourself in a position of comfort thinkin about what else you can mess with, start to experience severe selective hearing, along with freqwent ear bending spasms, highlevels of anxiety, and the severe ability to hold bodily functions to catch that latest transmission or see that freq appear. The freqwent eyes shifting from screen to screen and jibberish scribbled on to paper that looks like some kind to top secret code. And finally when you do make it into the facilities you look in the mirror and notice you look like that Craig Ferguson dude looking into the camera on late nite tv.:wink:

I have had this addiction for 29 years now and I love being hopelessly hooked on it and never want to be rehabbed for this. :) While I never listen to more than one scanner at once, it's always on when I'm in the house and even parked on one frequency or talk group(usually a fire department or PD or FD mutual aid network) when I'm watching TV. I often take it in the car with a sound feeder. It's just fun to listen to I guess when you ask for a reason.
