Sentinel: Why not leave all Service Types ON in Sentinal Profile?

Since the SDS100 doesn't turn service types ON if a particular service type is not used in a Favorite List, why not just leave them all enabled in Sentinal? Or does that somehow slow scanning down or cause some other problem for the SDS100?

Good question. Does the radio first look and then disregard all those service types that are not programmed in as a FL? Or does the radio just ignore? Does leaving them on even if the radio isn’t scanning anything that’s related?

I don’t have anything on that I’m not listening to. On long trip using GPS the ones I’m not interested in are certainly turned off.

I leave all service types selected for both my SDS100 & 200, never had any issues. However, I do not use the GPS or zip code features. I create and use FAV lists.

It depends how you design you FLs. Some people make have FL for county specific police and then another for county specific fire and then for any number of other things. Then some may have a county FL that has everything in one. If using the full database it is clearly needed to use them. Scanning more is listening to less.
So you can see depending on how you design your FL the service type can be useful. It's a great way for added flexibility.

I keep them all on *unless* I am using the database with GPS while traveling. In that case, I only want certain things on, so I use the Service Types to adjust how much of the database I scan.
I don't mess with Service Types with FL's because if I need to turn on, say, the airport real quick, I know which Quick Keys to press to do that, knowing that the Service Type is already on. I look at Service Types as one of those "set it and forget it" deals.

I don't use GPS but occasionally do a zip code search, I have all service types on that the radio will allow me to do.

The only downside is I might get an oil delivery truck dispatcher or a school bus dispatcher or the water department yammering on.. it's easier just to permanently lock out that object than to go in and turn that service type off whatever it was named, sometimes they're mislabeled.

Because there are some service types that I'm not interested in listening to. More so when I'm using the RRDB and GPS because I'm traveling in an area I don't have my SDS scanners programmed for.

I also lock out some "nationwide" frequencies because I get to much hash on them. Red Cross frequencies for example.

That's not correct. Whether a given service type is enabled, or disabled, is set either in your Profile in Sentinel, or via the menu when making changes directly on the scanner.

Just because a given service type is not present in one or more of the Favorites being scanned does not men that that type is turned off. If a Service type is not used in a Favorites list (or in the portions of the main database being scanned if using your location & range) you will see, only a dotted line, and cannot toggle that type on or off.

Since that service type is not currently in use on any Favorites list, (or main database channels as defined by your location & range), you see only the dotted line.

In this screenshot, the Corrections service type is present on one or more active lists, but is not enabled:

No channels tagged as Aircraft, Business, or Federal are present in the lists being scanned, so you cannot toggle that type on or off.
