Why there's no call sign listed for 753F site 6...

There are channels on each site of Calgary's Smartzone system that serve no purpose except to do morse code IDs every 30 minutes or so. Over the past few years I've managed to catch each of the first 5 sites at just the right moment to sample and translate the CW ID.

I live a long distance away from site 6, so I don't often get to hear it. However, the other day I just happened to be in the northeast part of town, and caught the signal..

Site 6 is transmitting as its call sign...

which translates to...

"T.B.D."

I kid you not.

At least I'm glad you didn't say FCC. The CRTC is not responsible for land mobile licensing, only broadcasting. It is Industry Canada.

I looked at that for the longest time and all I could come up with was that it was the radio techs initals ... kinda like RF graphitti.

I guess TBD is better than MYOB.

Now that we're onto CW ID stories, here's another. The first EDACS system around here which showed up in the 80's, I ID'd with some difficultly as XML16PLUS. XML16 could be a valid callsign, but 16PLUS was GE's predecessor to EDACS. The system used the "GE jingle" timeout sequence, that upscale if raspy set of "notes" to indicate the timeout progression on a voice channel. I recall the Toronto EMS EDACS system doing that one time a number of years back.
