My 400 has the "A" VFO in AMS all the time and have never heard a drop out during analog QSO's. Even during long-winded transmissions that timeout the repeater. I have also not heard it on my FT1D either.

Follow up on the 'drop out' issue:

I got a PM from a user who said they believe that a firmware/dsp update to the radios eliminated the drop out that existed and it now checks silently in the background for digital. My mobile hasn't been updated in awhile since it's installed mobile so that is probably the issue. I checked it with my 1DR last night, which has the latest firmware/dsp, and did not hear the drop out anymore. He did say his experienced the 'drop out' before the update and he knew what I was talking about.
