Don't use windows drivers. Use the one from Unidens page. You will need to un-install the window drivers first. Or click update and manually path it to the saved Uniden driver
Tried to install driver manually and I get Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

How about details on your computer and OS???

Do you have the machine on AC power?

Make sure the USB is not set to Power Save Mode.

Do USB flash drives work in the machine?

Try other USB ports on the machine.

Might need to uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers on the machine as well?

I received my new to me 536HP this afternoon. After loading the Favorites Lists and verifying that the scanner did in fact work well, I tackled the dongle and firmware updates using the information at the link in the first post.

The dongle update took a bit of work, because I found the update directions a bit confusing. I finally gave up trying to follow the instructions, plugged the dongle into the scanner, and went ahead with the firmware update. I figured the worst that could happen was I'd hose the dongle and have to wait for a fix.

The firmware updated went without a hitch. Checking the dongle firmware version I have 7.28. I had checked it before I started and it was 4.xx or something. So, the firmware updated.

I started VLC media player, plugged in the scanner IP address and it worked first time. It took a few seconds for VLC to find the scanner, but it took off after that. There is about .5 second latency between the scanner speaker and VLC.

Then I launched the RH536 software. I entered the IP address for the dongle an the program instantly started working. I know that this is mostly an engineering mule, but it works petty well for something that isn't intended for release to the public.

A couple of observations about this scanner as compared to my first one. Slight off topic, but I'm hoping the UPMan might read it and give a bit of guidance on one issue.

First, the display on this unit seems much brighter than the first one. If that bears out when I do a side by side comparison, this will go in my truck. Then I'll need to figure out if I want to get the other unit fixed. That's assuming this is a defect and not just unit to unit variation.

Second, this came with an aftermarket Samsung 16GB memory card. There doesn't seem to be any latency between pushing the "Avoid" button and the unit actually avoiding. I might just buy another 16 GB card and see if that improves the performance of my other 536.

Back on topic. I'm really happy with this update so far. I still have to try to connect via my phone and laptop with Win 8.1 on it.

Very nice work by Uniden. Others might not agree, but this was probably not an easy process.

I'm looking forward to more development.

something else that I noticed that is odd in the stream behavior is that when the radio is silent for a while (no traffic radio) it will stop the stream totally and when it unmutes the stream starts again - so then the problem is that RTSP thinks it was just a packet loss then it just kicks back in and has to start again.. if the software isnt ready for this seems to miss traffic untill the scanner processor kicks the "new feed" so everything can synch up and work.you can monitor this easily with the VLC stats - working on more detailed later

BCD536HP WiFi Support Update Release

Dongle will not update. Ran it as Admin.

Here is what I get :See the end of this message for details on invoking

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

And you've installed the STM_VCP drivers?
I've tried several times. One thing is this dongle has been plugged in since last May. I did an install then (for the dongle). This Fall I had a HD failure and changed out the HD. I reinstalled every thing. Win7 and all other programs. Didn't touch the 536 though except Sentinal and HP1 Sentinal

FirstClass: You need to run as administrator.

rcool101: I'm confused. You said you installed the drivers. Then you said you've only updated Sentinel. Did you do Step 3 of the instructions?

Well so far I updated my wifi dongle from 5.01 to 7.28
This is with the newest batch of instructions listed in the link UPMan posted in the first post.

The first time the program crashed so I ended up with firmware version 0.00.

Ran it again two times and it updated just fine. Just remember to run as administrator it will not work other wise.

First line in my post "Ran as Admin"

First line in your error message: "Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Uniden\BC-WF1_FirmwareUpdater\2_10_2015_5_30_33_PM.log' is denied."

This is caused by not having administrative privileges.

Works really well. Seeing how much data is streamed makes me hopeful that Siren will show more data (trunk site info) than the 536 display itself does.

Has anyone tried to get this to work on a remote pc outside of the network?

Yes...see posts around page 13. The remote software can be ported out and works fine out over the internet, but VLC ports are dynamic and change all over the place, so you can't port forward the sound.

Uniden scanner VLC

I got it to work on my pc, im going to try it later remotely , sofaking youll have to set up your router to a vitrual server mode , you will need to know your ip address and the ip address of your scanner to get it to work, id dont see any reason why it wouldnt work , but where is the app????

Jay,

"First line in your error message: "Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Uniden\BC-WF1_FirmwareUpdater\2_10_2015_5_30_33_PM.log' is denied.""

Yes that is what thought since I ran as Admin. My thinking was something had it open so I rebooted and ran again with same result w/full admin account. In any event not going to spend a lot of time on this.

My wireless network runs on WPA2 and I had my scanner connected just fine pre-upgrade.

As for DHCP server, you have a good point, but what may be even better is if you have the ability to assign a static IP over DHCP. My Asus router allows this; when a device with a recognized MAC address requests a DHCP assignment, it will always deliver the same IP address to that device. I have my Chromecasts set up that way; one is always given .101 and the other .102. I plan to set up my scanner the same way once I get my dongle working.

You're confusing scanner firmware 1.05.01 with dongle firmware 5.01. The instructions on the 536 wiki on Uniden's site, prior to last week, involved downloading a firmware updater and update file for your dongle. This, when applied, elevated your dongle from whatever the factory firmware was (4.60?) to 5.01. The 7.28 firmware is the version released this past week.

I always reserve (same as setting a static almost) (kind of what at&t now calls a "sticky" static) my IP devices also but from a Windows Server DHCP server. Keeps things nice and neat.
The DHCP server in Win Server works from the devices MAC as well.
I use my wireless router in access point only mode with no WAN connection and let my Zyxel router handle security and NAT/port forwarding stuff.

I did miss the fact that the original post did not refer to firmware 1.05.01.
I just saw the 5.01 reference and assumed they also made a mistake in the FW number and were talking about the new radio firmware as well as the new dongle firmware.
Thanks for catching that mistake on my part!

edit: I did test VLC as well as the RH control app over and endpoint to endpoint VPN tunnel yesterday and today and they both ran all day with no disconnects or other problems other than a minor SQK problem.

I went into RH and was either turning off or on a FL QK and the scanner did not acknowledge the change but in RH, it did show that I had toggled the FL QK and would not let me toggle it back, I had to exit RH and then restart it and then it worked fine.
I figure that change could have occurred just as the routers were re-negotiating their VPN connections.

I've still not tried actual port forwarding as the VPN tunnels are my primary connection back home while at work. Only works IPs are allowed but if I do attempt port forwarding and going in direct through the public IP, I'd still restrict it too my work IPs for now or until Uniden release's a formal public RH type application that may offer some type of password protection..

After a lot of frustration and walking away a few times I have it all working GREAT!!
Dongle updated from ver 4 to 7
WiFi working great on scanner shows home IP
WiFi working great on home network see the scanner on router
VLC Player set up working see and hear audio from scanner
Uniden Remote Head Software set up and working see scanner and can control it

Downloaded Free Team Viewer Desk Top Remote Software set up working
Downloaded Android APP Free Team Viewer Remote Software for Phone and WORKS GREAT!!!! Can pull up PC desk top and open up and start Uniden and VLC programs on Cell Phone using Team Viewer and stream on 4G LTE NICE!!!! only a few seconds lag between scanner and using it on the net.
Using Cable Modem and 35 MB service plenty fast for streaming out of network

Just need the real APP now as promised a year ago from Uniden

I highly recommend the Free Team Viewer Desk Top Control and phone APP makes it easy to use the two programs over the net on a PC or Phone all 3 programs are FREE that’s the best part and bam can use my 536 any where I am to cool. Not stuck with other peoples scanner feeds can listen to what I want to listen to.

Just wish I could help all of you still having trouble to get up and running not sure what I could tell you that I did different to make it work I guess was lucky in the firmware updates
