WICHITA, Kansas, July 12, 2008-A Wichita police officer was shot late Friday night after trying to stop what police call a suspicious person east of Maple and Meridian.
The officer was taken to a hospital in serious condition. His current condition is not being released.
The man who shot the officer fled on foot. Police say they responded to tips from the public and tracked down the suspect, who shot himself at around midnight, a few blocks from the officer involved shooting scene. The shooting suspect later died.

Additional information has been released. The officer, a 3 year veteran of the Wichita Police Department, was struck twice, once in each leg. He under-went surgery to remove a bullet from one of his legs this weekend. He is still listed in serious, but stable condition. They also confirmed the suspect took his own life with a gunshot to the head several minutes later about four blocks away as responding officers from Wichita PD, Sedgwick County Sheriff, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Kansas Bureau of Investigation were closing in on his location.

The officer was responding to the area on an initial call of a suspicious person and had just made contact with the suspect when the suspect opened fire on the officer and then fled on foot. That officer and a just arriving backup officer returned fire, but did not strike the suspect. Information was not released on what sort of suspicious activity was initially reported.

The Wichita Police Chief, did comment that this shows, graphically, that there is no such thing as a "routine call."

OK, I don't care if it is going to be 98 degrees today, the vest goes on before the officer goes "in-service"....
