Emergency 9-1-1 telephone service is currently down in the following Michigan counties:

  • Clinton
  • Eaton
  • Ingham
  • Ionia
  • Jackson
  • Montcalm
Residents are urge to call their local police and fire departments if needed, on phone numbers listed in their local directories. Unknown as to what the cause is behind this widespread failure at this time.

Yours truly,

Ron

Hillsdale too. It's an AT&T thing.

Something similar in Iowa a month or so ago... they had Amtuer Radio at street corners to be available and had activated Races/Ares

This is what happens when they put all their eggs in one basket.

True. You do need phone lines to have a 911 system. Not sure that's "one" basket ;)

Same thing will happen with all these STATEWIDE trunked systems one day.

No, they all are capable of running on their own in case of an infrastructure break.

yup
Statewide TRS will lose 1 tower (due to a tornado or bulldozer perhaps) and everyone will wonder why a whole countys worth of radios became useless exactly at the time when they were needed the most. Peter sz

If they are capable of running alone, did they do that in this inciddent?

There was no problem with the MPSCS system. This was a 911 issue.

If the statewide TRS goes down, every county would be on its own tower still. So they can talk back and forth to each other - just can't talk to anyone not on that tower.
