Waiting for my Yaesu FT-3DR to arrive and was wondering which would be the best mobile radio to pair with it. The FT-3DR interested me due to the wide amount of receive frequencies.
  • A(Main) Band RX:
    • 0.5 - 1.8MHz (AM Broadcast)
    • 1.8 - 30MHz (SW Band)
    • 30 - 76MHz (50MHz HAM)
    • 76 - 108MHz (FM Broadcast)
    • 108 - 137MHz (Air Band)
    • 137 - 174MHz (144MHz HAM)
    • 174 - 222MHz (VHF TV)
    • 222 - 420MHz (GEN1)
    • 420 - 470MHz (430MHz HAM)
    • 470 - 800MHz (UHF Band)
    • 800 - 999.90MHz (GEN2, USA Cellular Blocked)
Is there a mobile radio thats receive frequencies match that? the FTM-400 is missing anything below 108MHz. Will the FT-3DR receive those lower frequencies well?

Yaesu's first Fusion® HT, the FT1DR, has all this receive capability. In all the time 've had mine, I've used only a very small portion of it; Air Band, 2m ham, 70cm ham, and portions of the 137-174 band for rail and marine.

I can't think of any mobile (except HF/UHF/VHF transceivers) with that Rx capability. Most will be in the range 108-174, maybe 200-400, 400-470 or up to 512, plus maybe 800/900 MHz (cellular blocked, of course).

I have a VX5 with similar Rx capabilities. The frequencies below 108 MHz require a lot of signal strength to be heard, even with a suitable antenna. Above 108 MHz, everything comes in reasonably well with either the stock antenna or external antenna.

As pointed out above, unless you get into an all-band mobile radio you're not going to find that sort of extended range on your typical FM mobile radio. The FT-8900 had some extended receive due to the added 6M and 10M bands but it was FM only.
