I removed the discharged AAA battery from my Walkman and replaced it with one that was recently recharged. On turning on the radio, the display flashed (indication of dead battery).

Thinking that I had accidentally mixed up good and bad cells, I replaced it with another. The radio promptly turned on.

Since I have a (supposedly) fail safe method of separating my charged cells from discharged cells, I checked the voltage of the suspicious cell and it was 1.34V (should be good). I then checked the voltage of the working cell and it was 1.15V.

I don't understand why the non-working cell would have a higher voltage than a working cell. Thinking that there might be a high resistance connection, I cleaned all of the contacts. No change.

I am reluctant to attempt to recharge the (1.34V) non-working battery. Could this be an indication that it has reached its end of life? This set of 4 has been in service for quite a few years.

Any other thoughts? Thanks.
