Please ignore if you have allready responded to this question.
I live in Trenton NJ and I was told some time ago that they will be forced to change from their old VSELP system to an APCO 25 system by
2006. Does anyone know if this is true?

Wasn't this exact question asked about a month ago?

It depends how you define 'forced'. They will not be required to upgrade, but support for VSELP no longer exists. They will have to maintain their own fleet of radios, or scavange parts from some of them to fix others.

From, the aspect of 'eventually, their fleet will diminish and they will have to do something if they want to maintain their present level of communitcations', yes, they will be 'forced' to make a decision of what to do. That decision could be upgrading to a P25 system, going to Nextel, Going to conventional VHF, or even going to Cellular phones.

But, I'm not aware of any requirement to upgrade by 'date X'.

The only dating I ever heard of was the end of support dates.... last I heard 2006 was the final date that any VSELP support of any kind was going to exist... though this may hve been moved up. :?

The feds might require P25 compliance as a condition of any funding for equipment or upgrades.

I have no idea what type radios, base and mobile, that Trenton uses, but they may be old enough that they can't be rebanded. If so they would be smart to get what they can out of Nextel and then the city kick in the difference to move into the 21st Century.

That old equipment will not be worth much and of course Nextel has the right to send them used radio equipment. So I would be real cooperative and try to work out a cash deal with nextel and and hope it would be enough for a down payment on a whole new system.

What's got me concerned is that Trenton PD likes the fact that no one can listen to them (as it stands). Battling gangs & drugs is a 24-hour-a-day job down there, and the fact that the dealers can't get the one-up on them is a good reason to hold onto the VSELP system.

If they move up to a newer trunking system (and I highly doubt that Trenton has the funds to implement a P25 system for only their city), they will probably go encrypted just like Ewing... :(

Anybody with a vselp capable Motorola radio can listen to them. They are fooling themselves if they think they are unmonitorable.

Some of the gangs and drug dealers out there are radio savvy. It wouldn't take much to listen in.

Exactly.. the only truely SECURE system is an encrypted one.... Sad.. but true. Heck even those that go to Nextel systems can be monitored if you spend the money and get the gear.

Heck, some of us hobbyists that have REAL $$$ spend thousands on not just scanners and PC's. but also Motorola, M/A-Com, and EFJ radios.

Sigh.. oh to be in that leage again.... LOL

Apparently the local biker gang had an iDEN service monitor. The local police service is one of the few that have switched over to iDEN for all their comm's.

Of course monitoring any "Cellular Type" (Transmitter layout) system is very hard even with teh right equi-pment since you need to be in or near the cell and sector one of the units is in.

Not too hard when the Regional police department is on the system.

They use it for their regular comm's so units are all over the area. You've probably got at least one unit in every cell.

And that is why Nextel frown on the use of Group and pushes 1 to 1 communications.

I doubt that Nextel sales reps put too much emphasis on the drawbacks of using their equipment, especially when the agency could (and probably should) spend their money on a real radio system of their own.

Welll.... Since Nextel is a REAL radio system..... :) Albiet a PITA... but they are an SMR.. And are developing a PS tier of systems....

And on with the iDen parade... Can we in the USA say a nationwide iDen TRS system for ArInc????? Luckily it seems to be a small movement compared to the basic APCO-25 party....
