The volume of a narrowband signal will be lower. If there are two transmitters on adjacent channels (an unusual occurrence) they'll interfere with each other more than they would on a "compatible" scanner. And you may not be able to enter the frequency of a "splinter" assignment - the scanner may insist on entering the nearest 5 KHz channel - which won't cause a problem, since your scanner is wide enough to receive a signal 2.5 KHz off center.

Actually, since most new assignments will tend to be on 'splinter channels' on VHF, the adjacent frequency issue will come about very frequently as time goes on. Both transmitters don't have to be up at the same time to hear adjacent channels on a NBFM scanner. You can easily hear the adjacent transmitter when just that one is up while listening to either adjacent channel.

Assignment of adjacent channels in the same locale isn't usual in my experience. I see no reason it should become the norm with SNFM. (Except in NYC [and maybe other similar areas] where most 800 MHz repeaters aren't even licensed, let alone coordinated. There seems to be a taxi company repeater on every corner.)
