Will you still continue scanning after December 1st 2006?

December 1st 2006 is the day Sasktel plans to shutdown FleetNet for good, will you all still continue to scan anyway?

They probably won't shut it down completely it will just end up like their old radios and still use them when the others fail. I don't really see what the big problem is with FleetNet anyway. Sasktel is moving too far ahead of themselves and in doing this it will only put them farther behind.

Yes, I'll still be scanning. There's lots of other stuff to monitor, aircraft (military and civilian) for example. Here in Regina we'll still have the analog traffic (including Fire and EMS) on the Motorola system.

Also, a lot can happen between now and Dec 1, 2006. All of these users currently on the Fleetnet have to go somewhere. If they go to the CDMA Push To Talk service, we won't be able to monitor them. But the high call setup times on the PTT will turn most public safety users off. Where will they go? Will they install their own trunked systems, or go back to conventional systems? There is a good chance we'll be able to monitor these PS users, but only time will tell.

So, no, I won't be stopping scanning, just like I didn't stop scanning when the Regina Police went digital and encrypted on their new trunked system, making them unmonitorable by any scanner.

I heard that with the system that is replacing Fleetnet, there is a 6 second delay before a message can be transmitted. That would be a major drawback for the fire departments, EMS, and other public services that need to use these radios for instant emergency communications. Anybody else hear the same thing?

Oh hell ya there's tons of stuff to listen too. I love searching for low-power "simplex" transmissions.

I live in the heart of Regina (the land of sex and destruction), and you would not beleive some of the stuff I have come across.

One of the most interesting forms of communications in the inner city is the use of FRS/GRMS radios. They are "cheap", and easy to use. The ease of use is a big selling point especially to those whose brains are fried on meth. Just the other night while having coffee at my favorite restaurant, I was listening to what sounded like a pimp keeping tabs on his girl. B&E artists, and car theives have been using them as well. I haven't heard the (car thief kids) on them in a while though.

There are cordless phones, intercoms, and all sorts of low power wireless transmitters out there.

Yes, at the moment, that is the state of the technology. Perhaps the delay (a.k.a. call setup time) problem will be improved, but I'm not confident a lot will improve before the Dec 1, 2006 deadline. All of the public safety users currently on the Fleetnet system are looking at their options now, or should be. I doubt any of them will be very happy with six seconds.
