Has anyone determined what Agencies and System Talk Groups have been encrypted by Williamson County? I am stilling hearing some PD and others. I am considering deleting and dropping Williamson County from my scanner.

Thanks

Joseph

I am in Georgetown and I'm surprised to see that all Georgetown public safety operations, including the Fire Department (wtf?) are encrypted.

Bummer.

As an update, I still hear traffic on the WC Fire channels and EMS is still on WC Scene channels. Whatever it is they are doing doesn't appear to be complete yet.

Wow, it must be a real bummer for someone from ESK ProVoice land to venture out in hopes of hearing stuff, only to run into this new state of paranoia. What about GFD's narrowband VHF dispatch channel? Tell me it is not encrypted too...

I haven't checked the narrowband dispatch channel yet.

I wonder if an open records request to the city might be in order to understand "why" they decided to go this route.

When I was running communications for Williamson County, I was big on transparency and public accountability. But then again, that has a lot to do with why I'm not there anymore.

Then (just a year ago, about exactly) only sensitive Sheriff's Office operations (SRT, Narcotics, etc.) and Leander PD were encrypted (and I had no influence over Leander.)

Non-compliance with NIMS protocols may be part of the reason - if you don't want anyone knowing you're not complying with requirements of all those federal grants, then you don't want them listening. Note that comment does not apply to Georgetown - they've always been good about NIMS compliance.
