shawn: win96 is an awesome little program... it won't hurt the radio one bit, just save what you have to use as a benchmark and then play-away... with the proper cable it makes using a 96 so much easier and more fun....

download a zip extracter from the net, there are free ones out there as well as the real thing.... but i think win 96 has a self-exractor so that isn't a problem... make sure you have the proper cable....20-289 is the rat shack part number i believe....

then make sure the radio is on, the computer is connected to the radio via the cable... and have fun and save your fingers at the same time....

pm me if you need help....

shawn: you can go to a rat shack store and get the cable (catalog #20-289)--MAKE SURE IT IS THE ONE FOR THE PRO 96--the other cable they sell doesn't work with the 96... i use one from purple computing: http://www.pfranc.com/pclink/ScannerDeal.mhtml took about a week to arrive.

this is where you can download the software: http://starrsoft.com/software/win96/default.asp --you get a 30 day trial but i would spend the 30 bucks for it because it will save you headaches and finger cramps as you try to update stuff... it also gives you some controls not available just using the scanner keypad. you can organize every freq you have and keep them filed for trips from ohio to london... and any other place you might travel--i can even send you my p96 files from covington thru lexington down to the tennesse border.

I have run into some problems with Win 96 (self infilcted I'm sure). Any thoughts would be welcomed!!

I've tried to download a file to the Pro 96 & the scanner shows a message "Incorrect Model". It appears to download though, a status bar appears on the computer showing the download progress. Any thoughts on this?

The next dumb question, when I download info to the scanner, where does it go? I'm very new to this & have been monitoring my area via the preloaded data & would like to switch to this file made from Win 96 but don't know how/where to switch to.

It appears you used the buttons on the scanner to transfer data. This is the method for cloning one scanner to another. In the Win96 upper menu area, click on Scanner->Upload to Scanner or alternately Press Ctrl+U to load to scanner.

no such thing

If the above corrects your download problem, then you'll see this answer after the download is completed and the cable is disconnected per instructions on the display.

Make sure the 9 pin serial is securly plugged in, and the jack is fully inserted into the PC/IF port on the scanner.

Thanks. I re-loaded Win 96 on my desktop (had been using my lap top). This time it worked. But in both cases (laptop & desktop) I've been left with serious conflict problems. In both cases Explorer continues to re-boot. I've had to remove the software to correct the problem. I'll try to do a clean re-load to see if that fixes my problem(s).

Ramrod,

Contact Don via his website. He probably has ideas. Make sure you let him know the particulars, computer, OS, etc.

Thanks for the help offered here. I was able to delete Win 96, disable a number of programs on my computer & do a clean install & everything worked great!
