I haven't opened Win96 in a while, but when i tried it this morning, it seemed to be starting (I get a message reading, "Loading"), but then nothing happens. I tried reinstalling the software but that didn't help. I'm running Windows 10- 64bit OS.

Thanks.

Try a compatibility mode?

Yes.. Same deal. I tried loading another .P96 file instead of the .exe file in case the .P96 that it would normally open with the program was corrupted somehow. That didn't work. Tried running the .exe as as admin.. Nope. Maybe an associated Windows .DLL file isn't loading?

Well, a lot could have changed. Has this program ever run on this computer, in this configuration before? Updates, upgrades, architecture changes are likely complicating this.

IIRC, Win96 originally written 20 years ago...that's a veritable eternity in computer ages, and I'm also pretty sure that it wasn't even written with 64 bit in mind at that time...few programs were.

I would try taking that installer, and running it on old hardware (to make sure your installer is still good), or a VM with older windows on it.

Hi a417,
Thanks for responding. I've had this HP laptop, running the same Win 10 OS, for about 4 years now and it always worked fine. I'm guessing a Windows update at some point after the last time I ran the app changed something that made it incompatible. I haven't needed to run Win96 for a year or so, but this week a local system changed to TDMA on a site I had been monitoring, so I was going to load a .P96 file that has the alternate site.. Oh well. Time for a new P2 scanner soon.. :)

Do you have an older 32 bit machine you could try to install on? I have some favorite games from 1997-2000 that won't run on my 64bit HP. Too bad because they were a lot of fun!

Same w Win 500. Perhaps Donny put a self destruct in the files. I asked that someone here confirm the files I have listed are correct but got no help. Likely because a) someone suspected I was drinking or b) I gave too much info to a newbie. Loading box appears goes away fast and nothing. I can still try my xp machine when I get around to it and if it works there then it might be a Windows block. MS cant make multiple monitors work correctly in Win 10 but they block programs they deem a threat like it or not.

I've had win96 running on various computers over the last 10+ years. Only time I had an error was when I plugged the "dongle" into the headphone jack instead of the "PC/IF" jack on the side of the radio.

There have been some recent Windows updates that have stopped a few of my old things working, and windows 10 won't run some of my older CPS apps, or talk to one of my audio interfaces any longer.

You may have received some updates to anti-virus software that now conflict with WIN96. Try temporarily disabling any anti-virus programs that are running and try WIN96 again.

I (and I'm sure many others) have been running WIN500 with Windows 11 since it was released without any problems.

I replied to your request confirming what files should be in the WIN500 folder about a month ago... but you never responded.

I have no problems with Win500 on my Windows 11 computer.
I run all the WIN programs on operating systems from NT 4.0 to Windows "10". Each version has presented different challenges other than running on XP and earlier. I recall in one version it was the DATA that Windows didn't like. Look under C:\ProgramData. In another version it had an issue auto-detecting which COM port my cable is assigned to. To fix that one I ran Win500_COM.exe which lets you specify the COM port, rather than it being auto-detected. And yeah there's some anti-virus/etc. software that causes problems too.

I'm running win 10 not 11 and never got a notifcation of a reply with the files list. The list appears to match but who knows what is in he actual files. I did get a 503 back end server issue the other day and see that no one else has posted about this behavior since 2017.
