This is apparently how Freedom is getting their new LTE network off the ground (excuse the pun). People are tired of 14.9m towers all over the city like weeds, and there's already tens of thousands of ready-made monopoles everywhere...

That looks like the cell enhancer site on Country Hills near Nose Hill Drive. That site has been there for 5-10 years.

The NIMBY's are out in full effect out here... There is a long history of city councils turning down cell tower applications here so the carriers have resorted to installing 100's of "metrocells" on telephone poles in neighbour hoods where they cannot install a typical tower.

The City of Calgary has no control over approvals for cell towers. They can review an application for a new tower, and make recommendations in favor or against it, but the Feds have the ultimate say.

I think you'll find that the municipality's wishes now play a more significant role in Industry Canada's decision.

There is one of those on 52st East between Memorial and 16Ave. Been there for many years.
