The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello. I hope I can post this here.

I have a Motorola XPR 4550.

I just got my laptop upgraded from windows 8.1 to windows 10, and now when I plug the usb cable in and then go to Read or write to the radio it comes up with an error telling me the cable is not detected or something like that. And the error code I get is: 1687.

So I am just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what I need to do to fix it and get my laptop to detect the cable when I go to read or write to the radio.

Also to when the person did the upgrade to windows 10 2 things from the software got removed they are: MotoTrbo Flashzap Driver and MotoTrbo Radio Driver. I don't know what these 2 things are or if they are important as to maybe why it's not detecting the cable.

Let me know.

Thanks.

Re-install the CPS to replace those lost files.

Prolific chip in the USB cable? Probably a clone. Win 10 always installs the latest drivers. The new Prolific drivers spot the cloned chip and won't recognize it. The fix is to roll back the driver to version 3.2.x. Plenty of previous threads on the problem and how to fix it. Don't include your radio model in the search. The problem has affected most USB Motorola programming cables, especially the inexpensive ones.

Ok I don't know where those other threads are or how I roll back the driver to that version.

I did reinstall it last night after I got my laptop back I clicked on the setup icon and then followed the install instructions telling me to accept this agreement and that then after that it was done installing and the program came up like it should but just never detected my cable everytime I tried to read it or write to it.

Just do a google (or whatever) search on windows 10 prolific

All of the tops hits describe the problem and the fix. It has nothing to do with Motorola or your specific radio.

Ok so it's a Windows 10 issue and if I go back to that driver that should fix my problem.

And the other threads on this issue are in this Motorola forum or what forum would it be in.

Thanks

Look, I just said it is a Windows 10 problem with the cloned prolific chips.

I've answered the question several times before on here and on the batboard. But, you don't need those threads to fix the problem.

Just do the search I gave you and follow the instructions. I can't make this any simpler.

Ok sorry. I don't check this RR.com that much just every now and then so that is why I never seen your posts on this.

Ok will do a search for the prolific chips and check about that driver and go from there.

Thanks

2 other things here I forgot to mention.

When I plug the radio in, it makes the beep beep or some similar noise on my computer telling me it's connected.

And under the device manager when I have the cable plugged in I don't see the Ports thing showing up there anywhere. So I don't know if this means something also.

I wonder what cable the OP is using. My genuine Moto USB cable does not have any 'chip' in it, straight wiring. The 'chip' is in the radio.

I do find that you need to connect the cable to the computer and radio. Then fire up the CPS. Then when the CPS is running, turn on the radio. The CPS should see the cable, actually the USB chip which is in the radio.

If you don't have COM ports showing up, then Windows is not recognizing anything and therefore CPS can not connect to anything.

Do you see any COM ports in device manager after you plug the radio in and turn it on? Since your computer beeps when you plug the radio in and turn it on, that indicates that Windows is then finding something. Check to see if you have any COM ports then. If you do, see what COMM port is being used and make sure that CPS is configured to use that came COM port (COM1, COM3, etc)

What I showed in that last pic the device manager that is what it shows when the cable is plugged in and the radio is on. When I plug it into the computer it makes that du da da du sound or a similar type of sound just like it did when I used it a few times on Windows 8.1 with no problems before I got my computer back last night from doing the upgrade to windows 10. This is when it started when I tried it later on last night and just again a little while ago.

Ok then it is most likely a Windows driver compatibility issue as previously mentioned earlier in this thread. I don't have this radio/cable so can't help with specifics, but if you do the research you can probably find threads on how to fix it, again as previously mentioned.

If you just can't get it to work, you can roll back to your old operating system. It is pretty easy from what I have read. Do a search on it and you can find what option to go to to roll back to 8.1 (or whatever you were using).

Ok that is what I thought it was a windows 10 issue since it was working just fine before the upgrade.

I won't be going back to 8.1. I am staying with Windows 10 now.

So will try that what the other guy told me to do about the prolific driver, downgrade to 3.2.0.0 from whatever version came installed with Windows 10.

Just curious do you know where on the computer you can check what version of prolific driver or whatever I have.

You might want to invest in a dedicated separate laptop for programming radios , with Windows 7. There are so many versions of laptop computers with different USB software that your head will spin.

Leave your Windows 10 machines for all the other stuff you like to do.

No I am not getting anymore computers. That is out of the question.

I already have a dedicated laptop for programming other radios, it is using Windows XP and this MotoTrbo 12.1 version doesn't run on XP if it did I would of put it on there but since it doesn't, I have no choice. So I will get it working again one way or another with Windows 10.

I will just do like the other guy said about that driver and hopefully that fixes my issue and I will be good to go again

The driver you need is the Motorola one, as the USB chip is in the radio. The driver should be on the Moto Trbo 12 disk.

Ok and I don't have any disk for the software, I got it from someone. And what driver from the software are you talking about that I need. Because there was 2 Drivers that got deleted when the guy did the upgrade to windows 10 the 2 drivers were: MotoTrbo Flashzap Driver and MotoTrbo Radio Driver
