Another option is to seek out the Windows programs that you like/use only, and regroup the shortcuts into a folder in 'My documents'. Then right click on the Taskbar > Toolbar > Add a new Toolbar, and select that folder. You will have all the icons in the Taskbar. That also facilitate keeping the desktop clean.

Here are some that I find useful..
Computer
Control Panel
devmgmt.msc
taskmgr.exe
mblctr.exe
resmon.exe
Disk Cleanup
SndVol.exe
scrnsave.scr
notepad.exe
Wireless Network Connection
...

Some of them can be found in C:\Windows\System32

yes, that is what I do, I just drag new shorcuts, but in my case, they endup in my created 'shortcut' folder. That way I can copy that folder and save it for later Windows installations. I find it more practical that way.

Also, my shorcuts are renamed with numbers, so that they stay in order in the taskbar. Don't want to redo that every time.
