I am just getting back into scanning and have a Uniden BCD996P2. Has anyone attempted to install radio scanner software on a Mac, using Parallels Desktop? Obviously, I can just go ahead and try it, but I wondered whether I might have to make some adjustments.

Thanks in advance!

Quick update: I was able to update the firmware using my setup and the USB cable. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get either FreeSCAN or ProScan to work so far. FreeSCAN asks for a NET update, but it still wouldn't start even after I updated. ProScan would not connect the scanner to the computer. It consistently reported the connection closed.

I will likely keep experimenting!

That’s how I have rolled since I got my SDS 100 in 2018. I run Sentinel and ProScan on Parallels with no issues. For me I everything works right out of the box - no adjustments needed. I don’t have a 996 so not sure what software it uses but you shouldn’t have any issues.

Software that supports the 996P2 includes ProScan, ARCXT (Basic or Pro versions), and FreeSCAN. FreeSCAN, as has been noted multiple times, does not correctly support programming DMR systems, and does not support NXDN at all.

See if this helps. the key takeaway is In Parallels' Devices menu be sure you select the USB device to go to Windows.

Yes, I use Parallels Desktop 26 everyday on my iMac Retina 5K 27". OS on Parallels is Windows 11 Pro. Besides the yearly subscription fee for Parallels, I had to buy a Windows 11 Pro license and am happy with the performance of both.

I'm programming the following four radios with no issues*:
  • Uniden BC125AT using Uniden's BC125AT SS software (v. 1.03)
  • ICOM IC-705 using ICOM CS-705 software (v. 1.30)
  • ICOM ID-52Plus using ICOM CS-52PLUS software (v. 1.11)
  • Unication G5 using Unication PPS (V0.4.0.41)
Also running various ham radio programs without any issues; Doozy for D-STAR, SDR Console, WSJT-X, JS8Call, Winlink Express w/ARDOPWin (Virtual TNC).

*(besides amateur radio, I do have public safety frequencies and other monitored frequencies programmed on the ICOMS as use those radios as scanners frequently)

I appreciate all the answers! I will continue to work on it, but I decided to get an inexpensive Windows machine, and both software apps are working fine. I'll play with them and make a final decision as to what to use. I will likely still play with the Parallels install as well.

I did some resetting, and now I have no problems using the software with Parallels! Again, thanks for all the assistance!
