What kind of wiring could I use to hang in my attic and down through the walls to use as an antenna? Could I use a lot of coax with a bnc at the end to connect to the scanner

Coax for an antenna. I dont think so. You could strip the shield back for whatever length you need, BUT, if you are going to that much trouble then just put an antenna on the the of the coax.

For a scanner antenna you would only need one of about 3 lengths of wire depending on which band you wanted it for. You could make a low band vertical dipole with two pieces of wire about 5 ft long. For high band two pieces about 18 or 19 inches long. For uhf two pieces about 5 inches long would be best, and would do very well on 800. Just connect one piece to center of coax hang up and solder other piece to coax shield and hang down. Any longer wire wouldn't be very effective for scanner freq's unless you are looking for something for shortwave HF.
