I am looking for recommendations and experiences with wireless routers. I need one to support an iPad that will be under the tree on Christmas.

What manufacturers and models have given you success or problems?

I am interested in the following features:
1. Good reliability
2. Good security - to prevent neighbors and people passing by from using my internet connection
3. Low spurious emissions to reduce interference with my scanner on VHF-Hi, 460, and 800.

All routers I think should be on 2.5k and 5k

I have a EA6500 it's the new AC type of wireless. Higher then N.

If you don't want to spend that much look at the EA4500.

Check the iPad's documentation. It might only use the b/g/n 2.5GHz band and not the a/n 5GHz band. If so, you might not need to pay for a dual-band router, unless you (plan to) have other devices that will use the a/n band.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 6_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/536.26 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/6.0 Mobile/10A523 Safari/8536.25)

Since you are using Apple devices you should look closely at Airport Express, AirPort Extreme, and Airport Time Capsule. The current models are all dual-band, extraordinarily easy to install and configure. And if you have an AppleTV you can plug via HDMI into your home theater/large screen Tv and very easily use AirPlay to show video/play audio on the big screen/speakers. (Airport Express does only the audio.). Also, if you have multiple Airport Express devices they automatically build a wireless mesh network to cover your entire house/property. Not bad at $99 each. I have all 3 of the devices I mentioned and multiple scanners and HF receivers in the house. ZERO interference.

I have to agree. I bought an iMac last year and splurged on the time capsule for backing up. I didnt know at the time that the time capsule is also a wireless router. I had been having problems with out Linksys router that came from Comcast in that everytime our daughter went on her Xbox, the connection to the mac would drop. I found out online that the time capsule could also act as a router, set it up, disconnected the Linksys and never had a problem since. Best router I have seen.

I have never had anything but good experiences with Netgear routers, going all the way back to the net gear hubs that I used to use. They have always been reliable. The one time I strayed and bought a Linksys router, I returned it within a week to go back to net gear.

I always use Linksys/Cisco routers. They last the longest and offer the best firewall and security options. I have tried other cheaper Netgear etc. routers and none can hold a candle to the wear and tear my wife and I put them through. Our Netgear fried in about 6 months of use.

Second on that. Linksys/Cisco makes great products.

Any wireless router you buy new that's on the market today will support your iPad just fine, and almost all include security, but make sure you look for WPA2 which is the current security standard, at least for residential installations. Dual band is really not vital. 5GHz band is slightly slower for data transmissions and the only true benefit is less interference if you live in an area where there are a large number of 2.4GHz access points.
