ok so i'm wondering.... i have the BC296D... i can hear the new system... fairly ok, but my squelch is borderline static on some channels and alowing this new system to be heard. i attempted an update, but for some reason the computer will not recognize the scanner. Is there a trick to doing an update? ALso will the update help me out here or should i look into a newer digital scanner for this system?

Hi,

I just got a pro-96 scanner and programmed it using the win96 software. I can not hear anything on the scanner but the screen will tell me a talkgroup is talking (2001 which is police dispatch) any idea what i did wrong?

You need to program all the base & offset tables for P25 systems on a 96/2096, as they are incapable of reading that data from the control channel.

Base & offset tables for the Pro-96 & 2096:

Base 450.0000MHz, Offset 8192, Step 12.5kHz, ChLo=8192, ChHi=12287
Base 470.0000MHz, Offset 12288, Step 12.5kHz, ChLo=12288, ChHi=16383
Base 500.0000MHz, Offset 16384, Step 12.5kHz, ChLo=16384, ChHi=20479

another question. from talking to an officer in town i think they have the xts2500. would it even be possible if i bought one to get it programmed to only listen to them (not transmit and to like block it, i dont want to get in trouble for accidentally keying up the radio)

No one in any official position will even consider doing that for an outsider (minor exceptions given to media now & then), and asking here on the forums on how to accomplish that yourself is gonna bring down a crap-load of negative comments & warnings.

Be safe - just use a scanner. If you can afford an XTS, you can upgrade that 96 to something like a 396XT or Pro-106/PSR-500 & get a LOT more enjoyment out of your money... ;)

Good catch, Bob!

Ken is on a bit of a sabbatical, so I'm left alone to process all the submissions for a short bit. Please be patient & I'll get stuff updated as soon as I can...

Do you feel comfortable enough with this to have me put it in the database (pending any further 'official' confirmation)?

I'm still picking up Woodbridge PD on thier traditional channels. Any idea why this is? Seems like TG's are proliferating on the new system.

In a related question, I currently have a Pro-95, but am looking to upgrade. Any suggestions on a scanner that would allow me to listen to all things that a Pro-95 can pick up, in addition to the new Woodbridge system, anything thats digital (but not encrypted obviously) on the Middlesex County system, and anything else that would be interesting to listen to? Thanks.

Eric: I would suggest a PSR 500/RS 106 or a Uniden model in the 296/396 range. Each one has a few different features that the other one doesn't, so you may want to start there. As for why you're hearing the Police in analog mode still, that's for inter-op reasons. Example: Edison Police have Woodbridge PD 1 (453.2250 114.8) programmed in their radios. If they need to talk to Woodbridge (as they did earlier today for traffic coordination), they talk out on the 453 channel, and it automatically patches them to TG 2001 on the Woodbridge TRS. The same goes for the Fire Dept. and First Aid Squads (I believe the patch is still there). And Woodbridge PD can talk on TG 2001 and be able to hear them on 453.2250. That's what they call backwards-forward compatability.

As for listening to anything digital on the Middlesex County EDACS system, they use the ProVoice mode, which scanners can't decode. But there is a program available to decode it, I've read. The link is on the County EDACS page for more info, since I don't know much about cpu terminology (yet).

And for better news: I was able to confirm the following TG's today:
6007 Sanitation
2009 Detectives 1 (Enc)
2016 Police Ch. 5
6011 may possibly be Parks (used as a Snow Plow Ch. in Winter)

Ahh that makes sense, and thanks for the advice GM. So TG 2001 is constantly patched to 453.225? Because I've heard some things that are definitely not inter-ops. Also, come to think of it, I haven't been hearing any FD or EMS traffic (although pages still go out on the OEM channel), so I can't say if the patches are there.

Also, sorry for going OT, but does any computer software exist to program something like the 106? For example Win95 for the Pro95 (which without would be a BEAR to program by hand). Thanks again.
