Those who monitor police scanners may be noticing a lot more silence this week.
That's because the new radio system for the Woodstock Police and Fire Departments is now operational.
The new multi-million dollar system also covers city transit and public works.
Woodstock Police Chief Rod Freeman says the new system will be most handy in the worst of situations. "If there's ever been a failing in an emergency response in a major disaster, it's been in the lines of communication. This new radio communications system, it provides our first responders to respond to any type of event more efficiently and more effectively and that's where the community will see the benefit."
The new radio communications system is digital and encrypted, meaning the public can no longer listen-in to dispatch calls and emergency response. It was installed by Spectrum Communications at a cost of $2.6-million.
