I have been meaning to post this since it happened, but have been kind of busy.
On October 2, 2004 I attended an autopsy at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner on Paca Street in Baltimore City. For those of you who don't know where this is, it's near the inner harbor around University Medical Center. Well anyway, on the way up it was a little foggy that morning. Well when I arrived at the OCME I heard a deputy back home talking on our EDACS system. All I have in my police car is an enhanced charger, which basically is a portable with a external antenna (similiar to moto's convertacom). Well I figured since I was hearing the radio system, maybe they would hear me if I tried it. Well I keyed my mic, and radioed dispatch to tell them I had arrived, and to my surprise they answered me. I talked to the dispatcher on the phone a lil later, and she told me it was filled with static, but she could understand what I had said, and my father heard me on his scanner at home as well. I was amazed because I was about 150 miles from the nearest tower. I know it can be chalked up to abnormal atmospherical conditions, but I still thought it was amazing coming from a portable.
