DENVER - For more than an hour Saturday night, firefighters fought 30 foot flames that severely damaged a home near the Denver Country Club.
The house and two others near it have been evacuated. Fire officials say there's so much damage that the house could buckle under its own weight.
"When the crews arrived on the scene, the back side of the house had completely collapsed and the left side had a partial collapse," said Denver Fire Captain Eric Tate.
The fire broke out just before 6:30pm at 186 S. Corona Street in Denver. Several neighbors who live nearby said they heard a loud pop or explosion before the fire started.
"I could see a 10 foot section of the wall in the rear of the house had blown out. All of the windows in the back had blown out. The kitchen was fully involved in the fire," said Steve Wilson who lives four houses away.
The blaze was so intense that firefighters were not able to fight the fire from the inside. They focused their energy on protecting the other homes nearby.
At one point, a number of power lines fell to the ground trapping a team of firefighters. The team managed to work its way to safety.
Fire investigators hope to get inside the house on Sunday to determine what caused the blaze.
