I saw an alleged Workman antenna last weekend at the Fairgrounds for 50 bucks but couldn't buy it then. The woman had it set up on a tripod, on a pipe a little more than an inch in diameter. I was told it was a Workman, but she didn't have any English documentation (maybe that's why it was 50 bucks?)

Anyone around MD actually sell those things? I'm under the impression Workman doesn't sell direct...

TIA

There's a bit of information on the site above and links that take you off to different places with info about Workman products. I know they make a rather reasonable VHF antenna with 6db gain that would be great for scanning that band. I'm not sure whether they are measuring their db gain in dbd or dbi. If it's in dbi, the gain would only be about 3.6 db. They seem to be mostly into ham gear with repeater antennas and various SWR/power meters. If the company has a home page on the net, I can't seem to find it with a quick search.

The one on display at the Hamfest was (I think) their larger model discone. $50 sure beats >$100, and if I had my ticket AND didn't live in downtown Baltimore, I might spend the extra green on a top-of-the-line model, but I'm just lucky my landlord doesn't really care what I put on the roof as long as it doesn't require an aircraft light on it, so I can live with the budget equipment, especially since I'm receive-only at this point. The discone it's going to replace is a Radio Shack that actually lived a pretty long life for the price/quality; it made it three years before the wind/weather finally started showing its effects. It's now completely deaf on 800MHz-1GHz, damned near deaf at 400MHz, and the notch filter can barely keep the 152MHz pagers at bay anymore (75-foot feedline doesn't help much, but I need every fraction of a dB I can get). The LMR-400 feedline looks to be in good shape, so right now I'm just antenna-shopping...I'm pushing my luck with cable, so anything directional requiring a rotator is off the list...
