I live in ws Michigan (49348). I currently have a ws1040 and it works pretty good for the most part. I was thinking of up grating to a bcd 436. Would it be worth the change? Or is there not really much reception difference? Any input would be appreciated. Thx.
Looking at your county, Allegan, in the database:
Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference for Allegan County, Michigan (MI)
www.radioreference.com
Your county mostly uses the statewide MPSCS trunked system.
The site for your county is Simulcast.
Simulcast digital distortion - The RadioReference Wiki
With a site close to you in Wayland, you might not have as many problems with simulcast as some others do. If you don't have a lot of problems with the WS1040, the 436HP should work. Generally, the 436HP is slightly better dealing with simulcast than the WS1040 & other Whistler/GRE scanners. Of course, if you are out & about in other parts of your area, there will be locations where neither the 436 nor the 1040 will work well. If you are running into problems now, your better choice would be the SDS100.
If the area you normally are in does not have significant simulcast problems, the 436HP would give you P25 Phase II capability, if your state system ever converts to that mode. (MPSCS is still P5 Phase I. I have no idea if a change is planned for sometime in the future, though you likely will run into Phase II systems in other areas if you travel.) You would also be able to do the upgrade to add DMR capability if needed. I see one of the fire departments in your county, Carlton Township, uses DMR, and there are a couple of DMR systems used for businesses.
