Just an off subject:
But I thought it was worth asking. What part of this hobbie do you enjoy most?

I ask this because it was this hobbie and CB radios(I'm showing my age here) that inspired me to get my HAM and GROL (General Radio Operator Lic)

On Ham, I have been on for 12 yrs and Hold and Extra class ticket. On GROL I went to school and studied Commercial Broadcast, Avionics communications and Doppler Radar.

All this was inspired by a cheap Radio Shack Scanner and CB that was given to me as a kid.

Did this hobby help you get a job in communication?
Tell me how this hobbie may have influenced you.

Took a job as a Correctional officer in a prison. About a month after finishing the acadamy and returning back to my duty post I got called into the captain's office. He asked me what the radio operator liscense plate on my truck wa all about. I told him about amateur radio. He said something like "so that means you know something about electronicsthen?" I told him I did. He said "well I havn't had an electronics technician for over six months and stuff is starting to fall apart. Starting monday you work 7:30 to 4:00 monday through friday and report to the facility department" Got the job full time 6 months later making the same pay as a lt, and no more shift work.

All because of an Amateur call sign LP on my truck.

Radios (4 chan TRS)
Telephone system
Fire alarms
Perimeter fence alarms
CCTV
MATV
Computer network infrastructure
Door and Gate controls
Metal detectors
And what ever new comes along in the communications/electronic world

Sometimes:
landscape forman
electrician
plumber
construction foreman
general foreman
painter
carpenter
And what ever management thinks I need to do

Have had additional duties as
Disturbance control team member
Sniper
Firearms instructor
Computer Specialist

And like the Marine Corps where every marine is an infantry man in addition to a clerk, truck driver, cook, technician, or what ever. Here every one is a correctional officer first. You may walk in the gate in the morning thinking you are going to do your normal job but there stands the Lt. with his clip board. He tells you to report to the armoury and draw an shotgun and go stand guard on the notheast corner of the fence until the fog lifts. Or you may get assigned to report to unit 1 and assist in a mass "shakedown" (aka a search for contriban).

Its not just a job, its an adventure.

Like you, started as a CBer when i was 12 or 13 but also had a Bearcat 3 scanner at the time. Think the boredom of only talking across town led me to ham radio. Now I hold an Extra license and have a Uniden BC785D. Over the years I have spent way more money and time on Ham Radio than scanning. Guess I love to transmit.
