HOUSTON - A Houston police officer working an extra job as a security guard at a club was wounded in the leg during a shootout that left a suspected robber dead in northwest Houston on Friday night, an HPD official said.
The officer was taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the thigh, said HPD spokesman Victor Senties.
His wounds are not considered life-threatening, he said.
According to investigators, three off-duty Houston police officers were working extra jobs as security guards at the El Chaparral night club at Northwest Mall when they saw two men running through the parking lot about 11:30 p.m., Senties said.
Shortly afterwards, a couple of people approached the officers and told them they'd just been robbed, he said.
The officers chased the robbery suspects and exchanged fire with them, he said.
The officer was shot in the leg, Senties said. "One of the suspects was struck and died at the scene," he said. "Another suspect is in custody and a possible third is still at large."
Senties said all three officers apparently discharged their weapons, although he couldn't say how many rounds were fired. Investigators later recovered a gun thought to belong to one of the suspects, he said.
As is routine in such cases, the shooting will be investigated by HPD's homicide and internal affairs divisions as well as the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
The names of the officer and the dead man have not been released pending notification of relatives.
No further details were immediately available early Saturday
