• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just purchased a Wouxun KG-UVD1P from Cheapham.com. Then, on some other web sites, I see they have a KG-UV2D and a KG-UV3D.

What are the differences between these three models? They all look identical, except the 3D has a slightly different looking case, but the specs and freq. range seem the same.

Also, I read that Kenwood speaker-mic's would fit the Wouxun, is this true?

I have the UVD1P and a couple Kenwood HT's(THD72 and THF6A). The speaker mics are interchangeable although the Kenwood speaker mics with the three programmable buttons are unable to be programmed on the UVD1P and serve no function. The USB programming cable for the Wouxun can be used to program the THF6A with the Kenwood software. I do think that the UV2D and UV3D received firmware updates that kept the display from defaulting to channel frequency when using the MENU+TDR buttons to switch from memory recall mode to VFO mode and back to memory mode. It can get annoying having to go into the menu and selecting channel name for VFO A and B

The major difference is that the early 'UVD1' models didn't have PL tone capability. After that it's mainly 'cosmetic' differences. At least that's what I've been able to gather, I don't own one of each so can't be absolutely positive about it.
Except for the very first models, any of them should 'fit' the average user's needs just fine. They do what is claimed for them, and are nice 'bare-bones' HTs.

The only advice I'd really suggest is to get the cable when you get the radio, makes programming much easier.

Yes, I ordered the USB programming cable with the radio. I have also downloaded the programming software and USB drivers.

I noticed while using the software to build a file to load into the radio that the software won't allow spaces, dashes, or other characters in the alpha tag? Anyone know if there is a workaround?

The only supported characters are upper case A-Z, 0-9 and space.
You can make spaces by manually entering names via the keypad or you can use the UV3D programming software from powerwerx.com. Entering a hyphen in the software makes a space in the radio.
