• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hey Guys,
Inspite of my recent problems with my UV-5R, Ive decided to make an upgrade to a better radio (was planning on it anyway) and had a few questions before I go making anymore purchases.

1. How does the 8D compare to a UV-82C? These are my 2 primary choices, Im beginning to lean more towards the 8D, wondering which would be the better choice.

2. Is the 8D for sure part 90 certified? do all dealers sell it with the FCC sticker in the battery compartment?

3. I own a Nagoya 773 telescoping antenna for my UV-5R, and its always worked great for me. I would love to have a similar one for the 8D, but havent had much luck finding one. The stock antenna looks super long, and Im looking to shorten it up at the same time. Would need at a minimum of 136-174 rx and tx, dont use any UHF channels at this time. any suggestions?

4, I know that the UV8D will do cross band repeat, and this may be a stupid question but can it do same band repeat? VHF to VHF?

I want to thank you all for being patient with me, I dont have much experience with radios, im trying to learn as I go, and leaning on the forums for help, so thank you all.

Thanks

I believe the UV8D does not have the 2.5 spacing. I have the UV6D V2 which does but not the crossband repeat like the UV8D.

I do not have the UV-82C but I feel that the biggest difference would be the larger display and inclusion of a channel selector knob on the UV8D. I don't know about the UV-82C but with the UV8D you can also get a larger capacity battery for it.

The 8D is listed as FCC part 90 certified. Not sure about dealers and stickers. It's FCC ID is listed as WVTWOUXUN07, which is the same as the UV3 and UV6 models

I do not feel that the stock antenna is not that long, but the VHF antennas will be longer than UHF. You might also try smileyantenna.com to see if there is another that you might like if you cannot find a Nagoya to fit.

No it will not.

My UV8D will also do 2.5 KHz spacing.
