I was told these radios can transmit an automatic DTMF signal over the air. How do you set this up? Is this even possible? Hope you all can help,

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

they can, as with most ham gear. why would you need to transmit dtmf around here though?
There may be a confusion in terminology. Both can send 'PL' tones commonly used to access repeaters. I don't have a need for sending 'DTMF' tones so haven't checked that. I do know those 'DTMF' tones can be used with phone connections to 'dial' a number, and some radios store those tones to make things more 'automatic'.

You have to use the ANI settings in the programming software.
You can't do it from the keypad.
You can program up to 6 digits and it sends them all the time on all channels. It is a global setting.

For what they cost, the general consensus is that they are pretty decent radios... but be prepared to be frustrated when reading the manual.

Are you sure that it is DTMF? Try getting a recording of a few transmissions, and posting them here.

thats what my captain told me. It may take some time since we only use our radios when on searches and that aint very much.
