I am picking up all kinds of low band skip here in Northeast New York from Missouri and other states in Central and Sourthern USA! How have never picked up skip from this area. I have a Monitenna about 20ft above roof line. This antenna is great for low band. Here is what I am picking up:

42.820
42.120
42.420
42.540
42.44
42.10
42.34
42.860
42.94

A lot of what I am hearing mentions the State of Missouri Highway Patrol.

It is truely amazing that I am picking up transmissions from over a 1,000 miles away!

I've been getting various State Police/Highway Patrol agencies on the east coast. I've also logged ISP. Tonight is a great night for skip.

just wondering...what troop(s) or base(s) are you hearing?

Looks like it is Troop D West Dispatch on 42.120 PL 203.5, callsign KAA243.

However, it also looks like I am picking up stuff from the other troops also.

From the FCC website, some of these troops are putting out 5,000 watts!!!

I was hearing Mashpee FD from Massachusetts on 33.68 MHz. They were booming in loud and clear. In addition, I was also receiving several Mexican stations in the 30-32 MHz range. I have no idea where they were from, but since the mobiles were loud and clear too, the skip must have been very strong.

From what I hear, even 6 meters was wide open as well. Hopefully, we will have more conditions like this in the coming weeks.

I used to get Missouri HP all the way to the coast of NC. That was using a 20" VHF antenna. I wondered how much more I'd get using a "real" antenna :D

Plug in 42.42 . That is the statewide lowband Dispatch to car freq for the Indiana State Police. 42.26 is the car to dispatch freq. I think Tennessee Highway Patrol shares those freq's too, so you may pick them up as well.

Out here in New Mexico I have the CHP rolling in tonight on lowband as well.

I was getting the downstate MSHP Troop I clear as a bell earlier on the way home with the lowband GE Rangr in my retired Troop I-assigned 9C1.

(Sounds good with a lowband ball mount, RC!)

Thanks for the heads up on the Es report.
I scanned 42 MHz but didn't hear anything except for the CHPs in LA. On 27 MHz hearing northern California, Oregon and a station in Maui, Hawaii at 10:00 PM.

NATURALLY my 6M antenna picks such a great time to give me a headache! The SWR is off scale, receives 20M better than the dipole and is generally pissing me off. Everything being on one mast it's a royal pain to deal with, I hope when I can arrange for an assistant it is a simple job and will go back up the same day. Bad enough one band is kaput, I hate to be off the air!

Bellevue Fire in Nebraska uses 33.86 and 33.68 which is simulcast with the Sarpy 800MHz system, and I could hear box alarms and tones all day and evening from back east, and this is over my fire pager and scanner with an 800MHz antenna. So very good low band conditions.

Nebraska State Patrol is on low band, so looks like they should have really good interop tonight. :)

Interesting, Ron. That's their old frequency which is a simulcast of their talkgroup on the MA State Police Zone 04 TRS. As a matter of fact I can look over my shoulder and see the tower that originated the signal, which is to the rear of my police station. Small world!

Low band DX was superb last night, and was good the night before as well. I logged numerous 42 MHz hits from the midwest, along with some 39 and 37 MHz activity as well. 'Tis the season. I used to enjoy listening to the California Highway Patrol on 42 MHz as well, but I don't hear much of them anymore; probably a case of not being in front of the computer when conditions are conducive to hearing the west coast.

I was using an Icom IC-R8500 with a scantenna for the event.

I am hearing the same skip here in Wyoming especially 42.44. Part of the day I hear Illinois, Missouri, Tennesee HP; other parts of the day I hear California HP. Six meters has been open to Michigan at sunset and Arizona at lunchtime. This is the best time of the year for scanning. Rather than listen to the same old boring local stuff you get treated to a random sampling of whats going on far away! If you have an old 102" whip lying around now is the time to hook it up to your scanner. Enjoy!

Compare your reception spots to the weather map at the time and you'll find out what to watch for in the future. That is for temperature inversion and duct-producing DX. The 10 meter Australian QSO is another dynamic in play -- ionization.
