WRC approves new Ham band at 472-479 KHz

Didnt see this anywhere else so thought I would post it here.

Looks like a 7-kilohertz-wide secondary allocation with power limited to 5w with higher limits for areas away from countries choosing to protect NDBs.

No it won't. Most NDBs use relatively small antennas and low power and they can be heard on a cheap portable receiver with a ferrite loop antenna.

Shortened antennas can be made quite efficient. There is no free lunch, however. The price is, it becomes a very narrow banded antenna.

And the rules for the band, when the FCC gets around to writing them up, will probably severely limit your antenna size and power output.

The FCC won't have to limit antenna size unless you own a LOT of real estate. A dipole would stretch the length of three football fields plus 92 feet. Well, you can get away with a 300' base loaded tower so maybe W2WSC should rethink what they did to the one on the property when the club bought RCA's old WSC coastal marine station.

I believe the WRC is proposing 5 watts ERP. 600 meters has served the maritime service well for quite a while. This should be a fun band to experiment with.
