To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Wrestling with CPS V2: how to lock access to menus

Hi everyone.

I am struggling a bit with V2 CPS on a DEP570e (XPR3500) radio. Trying to find a way to lock out all the menus so the radio user cannot open them. This particular radio will not need them, and in this case its a good idea to keep curious fingers from playing around inside those menus and then creating problems, specially from the Utilities menu.

I have so far cleared all the check boxes in the MENU section which did basically nothing as I can still open any of the menus from the radio keypad.

At the CONTROL BUTTONS section I set the Keypad Lock Options to Lock Keypad, but that only allows me to lock/unlock the keypad with a predefined key, so that really is not helping me either. I even tried locking the keypad manually, but upon power cycling the radio resets this setting so the keypad once again becomes accessible.

I've been combing the CPS up and down but can't find anything else that might be related.

Help within CPS has not been useful either.
Anyone know what I might be missing? I am using latest v2.110.235.0.

Thank you for any information.

under menu unchecking all the menu items and then under general settings front panel programming password set that to disabled. That's how i have my radios setup at work and the only options that come up on the menu are contacts which they can only scroll through the contact list and view the details of the contact, messages but when trying to open that it says list empty, they can change Bluetooth status and pair Bluetooth devices, under radio settings they can change the brightness, backlight timer, voice announcements, and intelligent audio that's it. Don't forget to uncheck private calls if that's something you don't want users to be able to do.

Yes, that last part about setting programming password to disable did finally lock down most items. I suppose it is not possible to lock the rest, like Bluetooth, but at least now there is no longer a chance for someone to set a channel to Talkaround, etc. I wish there was a way to completely block everything to have more control and only strictly leave any harmless options that one could specifically allow. A bored radio operator will definitively play with whatever is left in the clear. And yes given enough time they will find a way to mess up something and then one gets the call that the radio is no longer working and needs service.

So why did I not choose a non-display/keypad model in the first place? Because I wanted the operator to clearly see the channel name on the display instead of having to look at the little numbers on the channel selector and try to remember what each one is assigned to. At power up the radio shows the alias which I use to easily identify the talkgroup to which the particular radio belongs to. Also display enabled radios can be setup in CPS to always power up on the primary assigned (Home) channel which is another big plus.

Thank you.

under general then networking you can disable Bluetooth. That's the best I have been able to find to lock the radio down is the above mentioned items.

Disabling BT when its not going to be needed certainly helps as well to lock down the menus.
Thanks again.
