Before a system restore I'd try to install the drivers a couple more times.

Did you try...
  • A different USB port?
  • Restarting the PC & trying again?
  • Are you getting a 'Installing new hardware' message in the task bar?
If all else fails try plugging your scanner in & see if your software can 'see' it.

My .02 cents.

You might try going to the Win500 Page at Don's website and download the latest version of Win500. Here are the release notes for version 1.74 that was released 24 Jan 2009:

Version 1.74 2009.01.24 18:27 (GMT -0800)

Removed all "COM port" nonsense from the program. Win500 now automatically finds a single connected USB-Scanner Programming Cable, and will prompt you to choose between cables if you have more than one connected (with the option to remember which cable was selected).

You may need to update your cable's drivers to use this new version. If that's required, the program will suggest it. You can get the new FTDI drivers from the FTDI web site.

Unplug the USB cable, insert the CD, then plug the cable back in and follow the installation instructions that came with the cable.

The CD will not auto-play because there are no programs, or executables to run, only the driver for the cable.
