Is upgrading from WS1040 to TRX 1 worth it?
Does the TRX 1 offer much more scanning options than the WS1040 to justify the upgrade?

Thanks for any opinions,

The biggest advantage is that the TRX-1 can monitor P25 Phase II systems, whereas the WS1040 cannot. If you live in or near a major metropolitan area, or regularly travel through or to one, whether on business trips, or visiting relatives or close friends, you're likely to encounter P25 Phase II. Without knowing your location (city, or county, and state is sufficient), we cannot tell if you are close to a system such as this.

Also, the TRX-1 can receive DMR and NXDN transmissions, which are becoming more prevalent for businesses & school districts, as well as some public safety users. The TRX-1 has the RadioReference database available on it's memory card; the WS1040 does not. While not the best solution, the TRX-1 is somewhat better on simulcast systems, though if that is a major issue for you, then you need to be considering either one of the Unication pagers, or Uniden's SDS series scanners.

Unication pager only really. The SDS100 was a joke and for fadboys only.

Thanks for the response and information I'm new to scanning and still have much to learn. Like most technology, things are being improved all the time but I think there is a point where "you" have to question what you want/need the tech to do vs what it can do. I'm currently in the financial position that I could upgrade and would hate not to do so and learn down the road with more knowledge that I should have taken advantage of it.

TRX also uses free ezscan software along with storing data on a micro sdcard

Not sure where you are but spending a large amount of money these days on a scanner could be a waste. I can't even listen to my neighborhood fire truck anymore! It's just gotten pathetic! The TRX does great on DMR & NXDN and there are lots of hotels and other businesses to monitor, but don't plan on monitoring much public service anymore.

This is not true everywhere. Check the Radio reference database for your area to see what is encrypted and what is not BEFORE you spend your money. This way you can make a educated decision, also note that if your systems are simulcast the whistlers do not always play well with them.

In my area the TRX models work very well. we have little simulcast and only a few encrypted police dept and federal agencies. YMMV

 Sadly, with the latest push since 9/11 ('DHS'), seems encryption is coming on strong (has been a long time). Maybe someones 5 year/10 year, 15 year etc. plans call for full traffic encryption onward (remember those 5/10/15/20 plans constantly evolve). Those with 'limited' budgets will get the 'trickle-down hardware' until all business/gov radios are encrypted. Maybe I'm wrong but what if I am right? The scanner hobby has been squeezed constantly for quite a while, this encryption model is slowly choking us all. Just saying...
