Whistler -1088 scanning

I want to start a thread where we can request new features. Now that we have a direct line to Whistler (WhistlerWendy) Marketing Manager.

1. I would like to see monitoring and control software.
2. scanner off timer
3. more than one limit search .
4. keys assigned to record & signal stalker
5. program LED red for record

I would like to see Whistler keep the same scanning format as the old GRE-psr800. Example, I can put any freq or TG I specifically select from various mixed trunk systems (a 2 site system or a 80 site system) here in Denver, into a scanlist that I create to scan only (Channel scanning). Not to get off topic but compared to the Uniden 436, if you put in a large multi-site trunk system in a scanlist along with other ham, PD, FD conventional channels, it will scan ALL the sites in that one large trunk system (system scanning) which is a pain, then it will scan the next few single-site systems or conventional channels and I will miss important calls because of this. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Thats my two cents,
Amos

'Soft' power down (standby) function for the mobile, with a programmable 'off' timer.

In other words, a separate ignition sense input wire on the DC lead that permits the scanner to be shut down (after a predetermined time) and powered up via the ignition source, without risk of corrupting the SD memory/OS.

Uniden had rocks in their head when the designed the 536HP power supply. I hope Whistler doesn't make the same mistake.

Why this has not been implemented in modern, high end mobile scanners is beyond belief. But then again, scanner manufacturers often seem to have blinkers on when they design these things.

My 2c..

Good one.

I do hope that Wendy is actually watching this forum. I've tried repeatedly to reach her via her work phone (leaving multiple voice mail messages). Also, not to be a wet blanket, but since product release is scheduled for November, it isn't possible to ipplement new features at this late date and keep their release on trackddz a product manager, I know through direct experience that adding new features, or making revisions and enhancements to features just weeks prior to a planned release is avoided if at all posiible. You don't know what you may "break" with your changes and you won't have time to test, repair and release in the remaining time.

As of 10/27 the Whistler 1088 has been FCC approved per Universal Radio's product page.

I think I would sell my Uniden for this.

I have already sold my 536 and am waiting for my WS1095 to arrive by UPS. I've wrestled with this 536 for months and had enough. I've been scanning since the old Regency ACT-10 (still on the work bench) and the 536 was a mistake to buy. If the 1095 performs the way the old GRE's did, will never even consider a Uniden radio, ever again.

If I was you .. I would have waited for the 1098 in a month or two. I think that will be a better scanner than the 1095.

Be interested to hear a comparison review once you get your 1095. I am going wait till the 1098 is released, but from what I have read the 95 and 98 are pretty much the same.

Good luck with your investment and happy scanning!

I agree, but his actions speaks volumes with what is wrong with Uniden these days......as I have stated before, pretty sad when a guy is willing to pawn Uniden's products (most times at a lost) and turnaround and buy a competitor's product without hesitation or regret....

same day - different stuff

I had already read that the 1098 is pretty much the same as the 1095 with the exception of some GPS stuff that I don't use. This would be a better time to pick up a good used 1095 for all the folks who have to have the latest models before they iron out the bugs. The Whistler is close to what the GRE's were and I have several GRE's.

And I'm not taking a loss. Got the 1095 on Ebay for $300 used but for only a couple of months from a radio guy like me. I've sold the BCD586HP for $400. So no loss. The Uniden is a disaster. Nothing is intuitive and even with the Bu-tel software its still a pain in the hind-quarters. The audio on P25 is distorted and barely readable, and that's with a good solid signal. The Uniden is like a boat. Best day of your life is when you get it, best day of your life is when you get rid of it. Won't ever buy another Uniden again. And this is from someone who loves scanners, doesn't mind programming them or figuring out how to use them.

My 1095 arrives tomorrow and I've already downloaded the software and got it programmed for my local PD/Fire.

As stated before by others My Whistler built decodes P25 Phase 1 80% sitting side by side with my 436 at 99% of the time same antenna. My 436 does not suffer from front end overload. I can add or lockout tower sites that are programmed in a system with my 436/536 My Whistler built the only way to lockout or clear locked out sites with my WHISTLER built is with a computer. It was posted here that the Whistler 1088 and 1098 that have the keypads solved this problem

CC strength question

How about putting the CC signal strength while scanning back on the display? I find this very useful on the 500-series scanners. Many times I've noticed a quiet scanner and note low CC signal strength. Move the scanner or antenna a tad, full bars come back, and the scanner starts talking again. The 800 series only seems to display CC signal strength when holding on an idle TG...at least I can't figure out any other way to make it display.
how do you make the cc strength show on the display on a psr-500 scanner id love to use that function. Please help.
Thank You Alot

After briefly revisiting the menu, and others please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think you can turn it off. My 197 and both of my 651's were on by default when I got them. It will show a signal strength in the RSSI bars at the top-center of the display while scanning TSYS objects. It will go out briefly as it zips through my CONV objects. And of course it displays either TGRP or CONV signal strength when it's stopped on something. With the GRE800 types, all you get is the little "T" indicator while scanning TSYS objects. The 700/800 MHz systems are so touchy -- well, mine is anyway -- that sometimes even moving the antenna just a couple of inches makes the difference between 2-3 bars and hardly any traffic being copied, and full bars and lots of traffic. It's something I find useful as a way to check CC signal strength without having to check the sites individually with FUNC+TUNE, and I wish my Pro-18 and -668 did it. For the record, that's one of only a very few minor gripes I have about either radio, nit-picking really...but we're talking about features we'd like to see added, if only as menu-accessed options.

Ok I have the same action from my units I thought you stumbled upon some "hidden" extra. As an upgrade I would like to see a conversion batch program that would take a current psr500 program and convert to a psr800 program. I could use it alot and im sure many others would also.

In PSREdit .. you can export to CSV file and then in PSR800 EZScan software you can import from text file. That should get you most of the way there.

That or copy and paste is about as close as you will come. The good thing .. you really only have to do it once.

Myself being a database guy .. I did my own massaging the data as needed.

WS 1088 feature request

I forgot to add just one more thing that would really help if the design of the faceplate (LCD display area) can be improved.
If you notice that the plastic is not that solid meaning it has some flex on it. Not to make a long story but at the airport I was loading bags, then a short time later I noticed the display has cracked, so I had to get a new faceplate, so please, please, a new design would help.

Ws1088 future design idea

Another thought. As a new design concept why not have the squelch knob to control the volume and the up dn arrows for squelch control (reverse). Easier and faster to use the knob if you are entering an office building or bank for volume level.
