Is the state police on the WVIRP at this time or are they still using the conventional frequencies?

In Beckley I'm still picking them up on the old 42.1 freq. On tg 9019 I only hear 1 or 2 of them in Beckley but Beckley dispatch talks to several units when they are down in Mercer and McDowell areas.

In Berkeley and Jefferson, they are on their 42MHz low-band, BCI3 (VHF high) and the WVIRP. They use low-band for dead spots and I think units in Morgan Co. BCI3 is used for TAC and talk-around type comms. WVIRP is used for main dispatch. I have a feeling once Morgan is on the WVIRP, they'll move away from low-band.

They are also on the 42.XXX frequencies in Mineral County. I only hear them every so often for some reason. Its usually when they are within 1 or 2 miles from my house and I only pick up the Trooper talking to Dispatch. I never hear Romney talking at all. Can anyone shed some light on why this is?

Fortunately for me, they still use low-band exclusively in the Northern Panhandle (Brooke / Hancock / Ohio) - Although they may also use WVIRP in Ohio Co as well, but mostly low band.

Romney

Not hearing Troop 2 in Romney? They could be using the WVIRP, Mike_s104 could probably answer that one for you since he is closer to Romney than I am.

If you do not hear anything in the posted band plan above as well as the RR Database keep this in mind:
In alot of counties in WV DPS is dispatched via that counties 911 center using thier (911 county) frequencies. Unless a troop has a reason to call the detachment or a troop detachment has a need to talk to that unit; radio traffic on 42.xxx whatever might be at a bare minimum.

Also monitor 156.0300 this is used direct simplex car to car for a chit chat for troops statewide as well.

42.1000\151.4
42.0600\192.8
151.0400\151.4 BCI 3 from Jefferson, so you might not be able to hear it.

Also, at certain times, not sure of the exact times, they switch from dispatch at Romney to Charles Town. So, it might be that you're trying to listen to Romney and dispatch is actually going through Charles Town. Charles Town uses WVIRP and BCI3 mostly.

Well there is a repeater site in Keyser, well a mountain up behind Keyser, so I wonder if that might be the WVSP? sounds like its time for an upgraded scanner :)

LOL ya mean Fett County.......
Personally I am NOT a fan of WVIRP...But 99% of Harrison county has went with it and one day (years or whatever) they will stop simulcasting...It will be interesting to see cities like Parkersburg handle it.

42.100 is acitve at Romney, I just monitored her traffic but I observed unit 288 out of the detachment to have mutiple VHF high band radios installed so possibly they are also using the VHF county repeaters in Mineral , Hampshire and Morgan counties.
