I was sitting in front of my computer minding my own business with the Uniden BCD996XT scanner sitting on the desktop scanning normally when all of a sudden the ALERT thing went off at full volume with flashing lights et al. What??? I have a Midland WX alert rcvr in the room and it didn't go off. I don't have anything set to alert in the 996. What the heck happened (besides scaring me out of my seat??!!!) ??

I reset the scanner completely and uploaded programming from a week ago just to be safe.

~~~picture of wierd log entry!
The weather alert on these radios is very loud. I almost had a heart attack the first time I heard it. Happens to everyone though.
It might be corrupted memory.
I used to see stuff like that a lot when I worked at a cellphone manufacturer and to a lesser extent at an avionics manufacturer.
Flash memory can get corrupted and when the processor tries to run the corrupted firmware you might see wierd displays, behavior that doesn't make sense or a unit that appears totally dead.
Usually reloading firmware and software fixed it. Sometimes only temporarily because of a failing IC.
At least with the later model Unidens that support field firmware upgrades you can reload the firmware yourself.
