Is it possible to run an old X.25 BBS through an AX.25 packet TNC?

Best bet would be to place an async PAD (X.3) in front of the X.25 link.

The X.25 and AX.25 protocols are not compatible at anything higher than the bit level (layer 2). For this reason you could use the same ICs that were set up to implement SDLC or HDLC (e.g., Intel 8273) to also frame AX.25, but the higher layers are different and not interoperable...

Ax25 packet has faster error correct protocol than x.25 has and also x.25 speed is close to 56.6 modem speed as where Ax25 packet operates at 1200 and 9600 Baud rate .........
