To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone know of any practical way to place a cover over the PTT of an XL-200 to prevent it from being depressed?

I have figured out how to do this for an XTS 3000, but not for an XL-200.

I often hand radios off to cadets in my fire company during training so they can become accustomed to carrying a radio and listening to commands over the radio, but some of them have a habit of creating an open carrier during training. As these kids are under 18, and learning the ropes , I don't tend to fault them, but I am trying to find a way to use the XL-200 and block off the PTT the same way I have with the XTS 3000. The method used with the XTS 3000, cardboard and duct tape, doesn't seem to effectively work with the XL-200.

Disable PTT can be set up on some soft keys I believe… at worst, you could have a training mission plan with no TX and a regular operation mission plan and load as needed from the fp. You could also just create a RX only zone that duplicates the channel layout of your main zone.

Reprogramming is out. I don't have the Harris software. The XTS3000 software is available to me, but cardboard and duct tape work with that form factor.

Radio training is on going, and the cadets are invited into that training. However sometimes just blocking the PTT works.

I may just go back to handing off the XTS3000 portables.

Personally I would just program the XTS3000's for receive only and hand those out, let them beat on those since they are not worth much anyway.

At some point in their future radio discipline will become very important and in that time I'd hand out the XL-200's.

Here and there
Program the concentric switch for ptt inhibit and other blank if they are training radios only. Remind them circle with line is inhibited while circle itself is able to talk for the 3000s. Does the XL have similar options?

The XL-200 works that way however I can't program the XL 200 in house, like I can with the XTS 3000 radios.

I might just find a few extra XTS 3000 portables, they are a dime a dozen, and move to all XTS 3000 for them.
