I am using multiple instances of XMMS to listen to various streams.

The problem is that the volume controls do not act independently for each instance of XMMS

If I change the volume of one particular stream, the other running XMMS instances adjust accordingly so that they are all at the same level.

My biggest desire is mute the streams i am not currently interested in to give priority to a single stream.

I could just close the undesired streams, but I usually want to resume monitoring them as soon as the priority traffic has cleared.

Does anyone here know how to unlink the volume controls so they operate independent of one another?

RR member rdale devleoped a problem called ScannerLive that does exactly what you want. But it's written for Windows, and also required Microsoft .NET. It works great!

ScannerLive, from SkyWatch Services, LLC

If your system uses the ALSA audio system, you can try running

alsamixer

from a terminal. Use the left-right keys, and also use the tab key to see your controls. Up/down keys to change the levels. If your system is simple, you may see independent left and right audio controls. On my system, which runs 5.1 audio, I can only control front/center etc - but I'm only using a stereo pair of JBL computer speakers.

If I want to listen to multiple feeds I'll just use different players for each, VLC, Mplayer, RealPlayer, etc. BTW I tried the ScannerLive program using WINE on Fedora 14 but it wouldn't install, your mileage may vary though.

I have also tried ScannerLive using WINE on Ubuntu 10.10 with no success either. Mainly the .NET structure can not install with out being on an actual Windows machine.

I use the Gnome "Radio Tray" program, but I have to change the URL every day for any of the live feeds that I want to listen to.
