• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I hope this isn't a dumb question but I can't find the answer anywhere.

I've been reading about the differences between the XPR 6550 and 7550 and one of the key points I keep seeing is that the 6550 wont use the feature enhancements found in release 2.2. Can anybody elaborate on what these features are in 2.2?

And also, on a side note, any input on the battery life between the 6550 and 7550. I would think the 7550 would drain faster with the bigger color screen.

Thanks for the help!

I don't own a 6550, but I would assume the same. That said, my 7550e with the 3000 mAh battery will easily last 30+ hours on digital and mid-high 20's on analog. If I disable the backlight, it's even greater than that. I don't know that I would personally believe that somebody's 6550 is lasting over 60 hours. Some of the pages out there are saying that the battery life on the 6550 is almost twice that of the 7550.

I've had both radios and the 7550 really isn't much (if any) worse on battery than the 6550. Of course your backlight settings will play a big role in that, but sitting on my desk RX only both will last a good day. I'd think 60 hours is absurd though, I've never seen anything approaching that.

A big point to consider with the Gen 1 radios (4550/6550 etc) is that the are no longer supported and will not receive any future firmware upgrades or feature enhancements. If you are ok with that, a 6550 can be had at really decent prices.

Thank you forts. I found some good deals so I'll now also own one of each. Thanks for your input!
