To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

HI, I’m new here on the forum. Before I say any more; if there is a rule, I’m in violation of or there is thread made some where already please let me know and I’ll go to the appropriate place.

Long story short: I been in love with radio communication for years, since I got my first FRS radio when I was 12. Through the years I upgraded to better radios. Now I have a set of 6 Motorola XPR 7550e’s. I went through the process of signing up on MOL and getting an account and paid for the official CPS 2.0.

I paid a local company to program 4 of my radios with 4 talk around channels. And would like to program the other 2 to match the others.

Disclaimer: yes, I know I shouldn’t be doing this myself especial if I don’t know what I’m doing. But that is how we learn, and I want to learn these skills for my self and to help others.

Few problems I’m having:

  • When I try to update the firmware, I get the update window (cps 2.0) but there is no firmware option (I have already downloaded and installed the latest firmware. I would post screen shots, but I think that is not allowed.
  • When I save an archive of a known good radio; I try to copy the archive to the unprogrammed radio and I get a “unable to write. Serial Number in archive and device must be same. Try clone device if applicable” When I select clone I get “unable to clone. Check that a device is connected with a compatible programing cable. Model Number must be the same and Serial Number must be different that archive”.
I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I’m trying to research these forums, check YouTube videos, and read the official CPS 2.0 manual, but they all seem to bypass these problems.

Any help would be appreciated!

Assuming both radios have 2.0+ firmware, open TWO sessions of CPS and put side by side on your screen.
Open code plug with the source radio connected and read it.
Connect the target radio in the other session and read that.
In the tree view to the left, put your the mouse over the CONFIGURATION menu at the top of the SOURCE radio, right click, choose COPY.
Move cursor over the CONFIGURATION menu on the target radio, right click and choose PASTE.
Write target radio.

--- Does this when you you are trying to install the version of Firmware already in the radio -- Maybe that's your issue..

--- Everything much match " Model Number" including EIDS. to clone a radio..

Cloning is for writing to multiple radios with the same feature sets. If one feature set doesn't match, it usually doesn't work.

So, if the radios have exact settings and frequencies. It should just work right? Could the trick that you showed me work for radios outside that specific family? For example. Could that also work for other series of XPR radios?

Cloning is only for radios that have the same model number, & feature set. [flash code]. Just had this problem yesterday. Had to clone 2 radios, but they had a different feature set. Made them the same, & had no problem cloning.

I have not had that experience. Some of the radios are coming with RX LEVELING for free. Older ones do not have it. If I open a code plug from an older radio, I cannot clone that into one with leveling. Likewise with radios that have EID's added. There's nothing I love more than getting 20 rental radios from mother ship and one having connect plus and the other 19 not having it. Please share if you know a way I can clone these.

Actually I think I know why. The radio I was cloning to, already had all the features my radio has.

Thanks for all the info. it’s been helpful. I just took one of my 12 XPR 7550e's and used it as a "play radio" so if I screw it up I can just the trick N1glt told me. I’m learning to assign voice announcements to my channels and such. it’s very robust software. I don’t understand 99.2% of it. YouTube helps, but doing it my self helps immensely.

Hey there, I checked the firmware version Under “device information” it says “firmware version R02.09.01.0001” I am using CPS 2.0.

When I download the firmware update from the MOL site. It says

MOTOTRBO R2.10.10 Firmware Update for XPR 3000/3000e, XPR 7000/7000e Series, SL3500e Portable.
(21 Feb 2020 Application 440MB)
DIGITAL firmware update to R02.10.10.0001 and copdeplug R15.05.13 for XPR 3000/3000e, XPR 7000/7000e Series and SL 3500e Portables. NEW !!”

The radio is clearly on a different firmware version. I have downloaded the firmware under the path “resource center-software-two way-mototrbo-conventional-firmware” I install the firmware, then open cps to update the radio.

When I click on update, it shows my radio on a list and under “firmware Version” it says none. And the dropdown menu shows nothing as well.

I’ve been at this for a about 2 hours? And can’t seem to figure out what I’m doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated!

hmm i see. how ever what do you mean the firmware is ok?
It means there’s no reason to upgrade, as that FW works OK. Sometimes a new FW has problems, so it’s good to upgrade to get rid of the bugs that were in that new FW. Me, I’m still on FW 2.6, using CPS 13.5 because it has ZERO problems, & upgrading to something newer won’t accomplish anything.

I'd avoid going to 2.10 on the 7550 if it's being used for Amateur use. There's nothing in 2.10 that would be worth the upgrade and it also contains new restrictions on firmware upgrades if you don't have a support contract in place with MSI.
