To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

XPR6550 CPS 16 How to make Radio Name display on boot?

My department has just purchased new APX4000 radios. We have several of the older XPR6550 radios we want to keep as spares for any emergency or critical incident. The boss has asked that they have the old assigned user name (i.e., Radio Name = "SMITH") removed and be listed as something like "WPDSPARE##" or something... as long as it shows its a spare.

I see the "Radio Name" is supposed to show on power up but I can't make that happen. I'm not seeing anywhere to enable that power-up name display, yet I distinctly recall seeing the name displayed in the past, I just never paid much attention to when it was being shown.

I suppose I can always write WPDSPARE01 in magic marker on the back case under the battery but there oughta be a way... any help appreciated.

General settings then radio name. once programmed you may have to go into the radio menu then utilities then radio settings and turn on the intro screen.

Radio Settings in radio only show talkaround, power, backlight, squelch, language and vox.

CPS Menu choices under Utilities doesn't have Intro Screen on it. I'm using CPS 16.0 build 828.

Make sure your viewing cps in expert mode. I'm showing intro screen listed when viewing in expert mode but not during basic mode. I'm using cps 16 build 828.

That was it! Changing to Expert mode did the trick. All the old radios now show "... SPAREnn" on boot.

And, I wound up writing the radio name inside the back case anyways.

Many thanks.
