• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

This is solely about the power tap for the units I mentioned above.

I already have a 996XT mounted in my car. I am looking to install and buy the MOTO radios (one of them) listed above. Will the power tap for the 996XT work for the XTL1500 or 2500 ? If no, what are the differences between the power tap for the 996, and the one that is used to power the Motorola radio ?

I'm not familiar with the term "Power Tap". Are you talking about the plug in the back of the radio?

Anyway there is a HUGE difference between a scanner and an XTL. XTLs are usually hardwired to the battery and the install wire gauge is substantially different.

As these Motorola radios come in several different versions, I would suggest that you do a search for the specs on these radios via the internet. As you didn't supply any details on the radios, the best I can do is to tell you to look up the power draw your self.

If you plan on doing any transmitting -at all- you'll need a new power feed for the Motorola radios. Current consumption depends on the model/power level, but they can draw anywhere between 10 and 30 amps. The power feed for your scanner is probably fused at 3 amps or so.

The other issue is that these radios are sensitive, and they'll pick up noise that your scanner might not. Modern vehicles use a lot of computers and all these computers generate a lot of RF noise. It's strongly recommended that you wire these radios directly to the battery. Tapping into existing wiring in the vehicle is the best way to pick up all kinds of noise you don't want.

The Motorola's also have an ignition switched circuit that will power the radio on and off with vehicle ignition. This is a separate low current power feed that you can tie into an existing ignition switched circuit in the vehicle. That power is only used to trigger the power on/off of the radio.

For just receiving, the Motorola will draw 2 or 3 amps at the most, and you might be able to get away with the power feed that you have for your scanner, but ONLY if it was installed correctly.

If you don't have a lot of experience with these radios, it might be worth the extra money to have a shop do the install for you. They can usually do a cleaner/faster job that you might, especially if it's your first time.
