• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have an XTL 2500 with the following specifications:

PACKAGE: Smartzone
MODEL: M21URM9PW1AN
SERIAL: 514CKR0886
FIRMWARE: 100008-000000-0

My question is this - the firmware suggests it is "capable" of Astro P25 operation, yet I'm not able to program it for an Astro 25 trunked system (I have an authorized ID). Does this radio's firmware mean that I will have to get the radio reflashed to operate on a digital trunked system?

Depending on the system you might also need the following
options:
Q173/G173 SmartZone OmniLink Operation
Q361/G361 APCO 25 Digital 9600 Baud Trunking

At least I had to have those options in my XTS5K
to handle the 4 3600bps systems as well as the 1 P25 9600 system loaded
into the codeplug.

The flash you have is for 3600bps Type 2, NOT 9600bps P25. It may be able to have CAI talkgroups on a 3600bps Type 2 system, but that is not the same as a pure 9600bps P25 system.

So, how would I go about adding the firmware elements to make it able to program a P25 9600 system?

You contact a Motorola dealer, you tell them what you need your radio to do, & they will give you a price to add those options. You then pay to have it done.

Before you even BEGIN to spend money, you need to make sure that your system administrator for the trunked 9600 system will ALLOW you to add this radio. This is NOT something to take lightly, and the flash upgrade is only the FIRST step. You will need to have someone program the radio to the system with the correct ASK and a valid ID will need to be assigned, ALL of which you need to have confirmed BEFORE you attempt this, otherwise its a complete waste of time. (unless you just like to have pretty flashcodes in your radio)

After re-reading the thread, it occurs to me that your system administrator should be able to point you to the authorized dealer that set up your system to get things going. Of course, the question always is, will your department/agency allow this radio if it is personally owned, or if this is a purchased department radio, why didn't it get the correct feature set when it was ordered?

I know it needs to be upgraded but my question is HOW do I go about doing that?

legitimate flash upgrades require a flashkey with the appropriate flash, you'll also get a HOST/DSP refresh. Any Motorola dealer can order one, though they usually don't like to order 1 or 2 radio upgrades.

Last I upgraded one to 9600baud trunking, adding Q173 and G361 ran around $550. But this was a few years ago.
