• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I have a XTL5000 radio with remote head. Last night a storm came through the area so I turned the radio and the power supply off but I did not unplug it. Storm went through, lights went off a couple of times and then came back on. When Weather settled down I tried to turn it back on and it would not power up. I checked fuses on everything and they were fine. Went out of town today and left the power supply on by mistake and when I returned the radio was on and working fine. However, I have noticed that the top of the control head seems to be hot. Should I be concerned? or is that normal. Have not had the radio very long. Thanks

These don't just click and they are on. Depending on programming and power up options, it can take several seconds to boot up.
Even in a brown out, the radio will gracefully shutdown and restart normally when the source voltage stabilizes.
As for the control head, the display module does run warm. A good rule of thumb is if you can hold your hand on it indefinitely, it is not too hot.
If the radio is programmed to auto logon to a system, your supply will need the full current the radio requires during power up.
Default for these is to stay powered down until the power button is pressed.
I have a UHF XTL5000 that powers on with just the main power energized, my others use the ignition sense and power button.
If your supply is decent, you need not worry about storms, brownouts, or blackouts.

UPS's are cheaper than broken radios. A switching power supply is not as forgiving as an analog supply with a transformer.

Follow up in reference to the above. When I stated that the radio had powered back up and was working fine, I had not checked the transmit. It had a programming cable plugged into and I was in the process of getting it ready to install in my truck. Anyway, when I hooked the mic up, it will not xmit, no red light indicating that it is. Receives fine, just will not xmit and also I cannot read the radio with the software. Computer is unable to communicate with the radio. Radio still is fairly warm on top of the control head.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to the components that could fail in a situation like that. Finding the failed part and fixing it would take a lot of work.
Ultimately, it might be cheaper to buy another radio. You might be able to swap heads around and see if the head or the RF deck is to blame, or it may be both.

Sometimes when it won't read the radio, I switch the programming cable to another USB port, and it works. If that doesn't work, you can try reinstalling the USB driver for the software.

To check the transmit, reboot the radio by unplugging the power from it. Install the microphone while it is unplugged, and then plug it back in. Then try to transmit again, sometimes, the microphones lose their connectivity if the radio is powered down and on without the mic plugged in.
